Streaming machine?

Ben gave me a nice Dell Wyse 5010 thin client.

I was surprised he did.

I never really thought of such a device before. I had a Raspberry Pi Zero W that did not get much use (Also Ben got me). I did not think I would use the Wyse.

It featured a low powered dual-core AMD CPU and all the normal ports with Bluetooth.

It had 4GB of DDR3 single channel.

It had a mPCIe connector, SATA port and a SATA DOM.

I installed a Kingston A400 240GB SATA SSD internals into the SATA DOM. I took apart the 2.5″ casing and slotted it in with no screw. It should hold LOL.

Ben recommended me FydeOS but I could not get it to work.

I installed ChromeOS Flex and got that to work. I wanted ChromeOS Flex because of my previous experience with it. It ran slow. Too slow. I streamed YouTube Music and it was OK.

After getting unsatisfied with ChromeOS Flex because it was too slow, I installed Lubuntu as Ben recommended it.

I could do everything like a normal Windows desktop really.

I streamed YouTube Music from FireFox. It ran better.

I hope to get another Wyse similar to this to build a DIY Photo Frame.

I still have my old 1979 to early 2000s printed photos to scan into computer to display. I am old now and would like to reminisce in the past sometimes.

I bought a mSATA 32GB drive to run Lubuntu and will use the Kingston 240GB drive to house jpegs and AVI files on the additional SATA port or USB 2.0 External.

I never thought these thin clients would be that useful but it does serve a purpose once you understand they only use like 10-20 watts. Great for small things. They seem stable and professional and good to stay on for hours as a streaming device or DIY photo frame computer.

Thanks Ben!
